The Singleton Golf Challenge takes centre stage at Entebbe Club on Saturday as 64 teams fight it out in the Season-7 first round of the annual event.

Slots to make it to the next round is the biggest stake in today’s action that will have over 150 golfers in action, including in the subsidiary event. The event is played over seven rounds with the Grand Final due on December 2.

Already, a new couple in the tournament (Elias Katwebaze/Evelyn Natukunda) are raring to go after standing out in the individual scores during the qualifier held last month. The couple joins another of Charles and Edrae Kagombe who caused a storm in last year’s event by playing up to the quarter finals.

“We plan to win the overall trophy by practicing, sticking to the same game plan from the qualifier, and giving it our best. It is not easy but I know we can make it,” Katwebaze said.

The Katwebazes will take on Stephen Magero/Dickson Akena in Match-4 of the draw while the Kagombes will entertain Robert Busingye/Innocent Nahabwe, the pair of former winners who have decided to join forces to try and win it again as a pair.

“This year we are going to fight for the overall prize, and we are going to take it one round at a time, but we are firm and prepared to do it,” Charles Kagombe, stated.

Match-1 will have James Okema/Emmanuel Lwanga taking on Elly Mukasa/Kiryowa Kiwanuka, as Peter Atwine/Bob Matsiko shrug it out against Richard Mugisha/Louis Tumukunde as Lloyd Busuulwa/Milton Edimu takes on Steven Kitamirike/Jamil Maningi in Match-3.

Another interesting match-up will have the pair of Entebbe Club chairman Jacob Byamukama/Paul Kagumya taking on the duo of club captain Serwano Walusimbi/Peter Magona while Ernest Wasake/David Odhiama will face off with Michael Monne/Henry Saka.

One of the long partnerships of Marvin Kagoro/Oscar Semawere will verse Andrew Atuhaire/Paul Habyarimana as the ladies’ pair of former winners of Peace Kabasweka/Sheila Kesiime fights it out with Connie Nshemereirwe/Arnold Bagubwagye.

After today’s first round, action will continue with the second round on August 26 respectively. The third round will be held on September 9, before the fourth round on October 7; ahead of the semifinals on November 18 and before the Grand Final on December 2.

John Muchiri/Isaac Mariera won the inaugural edition in 2017 before the ladies’ pair of Peace Kabasweka/Sheila Kesiime took their turn the following year.

In 2019 it was Richard Lutwama & Robert Busingye’s turn to enjoy the same before Adoch Luwum/Innocent Nahabwe won the 2020 edition in the year the tournament was interrupted by the rampaging COVID-19 pandemic, including the 2021 edition which wasn’t completed due to the lockdown. Patrick Ndase/Philemon Akatuhurira are the defending champions.

UBL through the Singleton brand has bankrolled the event to the tune of sh250m, with NCBA Bank and DStv for Business chipping in with sh30m and 25m respectively.

Six air tickets to Dubai, Mombasa, and Zanzibar courtesy of Uganda Airlines will be up for grabs at the tail end of the annual championship in December.
