Team Uganda made a strong impression at this year’s International Schools Sports Federation (ISF) Gymnasiade U18 games held in Manama, Bahrain.
The 52-strong delegation, representing six schools across the country, showcased their talents across multiple sports, including basketball, badminton, table tennis, tennis, swimming, and athletics.
Despite stiff competition, Uganda came away with three medals—two silver and one bronze—marking a significant achievement for the team.
Medal Highlights
Silver in Athletics:
Brenda Chekwemoi earned a silver in the 800m, finishing second in a time that showcased her stamina and competitive spirit.
Bronze in Tennis:
Adrian Zziwa and Said Kato, from Kibuli SS, captured bronze in men’s doubles tennis. They triumphed 4-1, 4-1 over India, securing Uganda's place on the medal table in an impressive showing.
Other Notable Performances:
Basketball (Girls 3x3): The Seroma Christian High School girls' basketball team made it to the round of 16 before being knocked out by France (13-7). They finished 12th out of 38 teams, a strong showing for the young team.
Badminton:
Bartham Kaweesa and Denis Mukasa from Kibuli SS made it to the quarterfinals in doubles, while individual players Arafat Kibirige and Olivia Betty Kyomukama reached the round of 16, contributing to Team Uganda’s overall success.
Team Spirit:
Team Uganda was also recognised for their exceptional team spirit and energy, winning the accolade for "Best Team Chant," adding to their success beyond the medals.
Cultural Experience:
In addition to their sporting achievements, Team Uganda also had the opportunity to experience Bahrain's rich culture and history. One highlight was a tour of the famous Bahrain International Circuit in the Sakhir desert, offering athletes a chance to see one of the world’s most prestigious Formula 1 tracks.
This performance in Bahrain reflects not only Uganda’s athletic prowess but also the spirit of teamwork and dedication that the athletes brought to the competition. The ISF Gymnasiade U18 games proved to be an important milestone for Uganda’s young athletes, giving them exposure to international competition and laying a foundation for future success.
