Tayebwa calls for standard Stadium in Ankole after thrilling Ankole Cup final

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has called for more investment in sports infrastructure in Ankole, saying the region needs a standard football stadium to support talent development.

Tayebwa made the call after watching the 2026 Ankole Cup final between Ibanda and Bushenyi at Kabwohe Stadium in Sheema District on Sunday.

Ibanda were crowned champions after beating Bushenyi 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in a dramatic final.

Tayebwa said more competitions such as the Ankole Cup are needed to bring communities together while giving young players a chance to develop their talent.

"We need more competitions like this to bring our communities together and provide opportunities for young people to showcase their talent. I pledged, on behalf of the Ankole MPs, that we will lobby for the construction of a standard football stadium in Ankole to support sports development," Tayebwa said.

He also congratulated Ibanda for winning the title and Bushenyi for reaching the final, describing the contest as an important moment for the community.

"We had an exciting evening at Sheema Playground as we enjoyed the final of the Ankole Cup between Ibanda and Bushenyi. Congratulations to Ibanda on winning the cup. Congratulations to Bushenyi for making it to the final. It was a thrilling evening that brought people together through the love of sport. Sports are important for our health, talent development, and social bonding," he said.

Tayebwa thanked Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, for his contribution towards the final, saying it added to the occasion.

"I thank Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda, for the generous contribution that spiced up the finals. It was timely. I also appreciate all other senior PLU leaders, and the MPs from Ankole, especially our hosts," he said.

He also praised the organisers, led by Osborn Mushabe, and pledged support for the next edition.

"Well done to Mushabe Osborn and your team for the excellent organisation. Count on us for the 2027 edition," Tayebwa said.

The final attracted a large crowd and several senior government and political leaders, including Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara, who also serves as PLU Vice Chairman for Western Uganda, alongside other senior PLU leaders and MPs from Ankole.

On the pitch, Ibanda took control early and doubled their advantage in the 52nd minute through Marvin Oshaba.

Bushenyi fought back to level the match at 2-2, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout, where Ibanda held their nerve to win 5-4.

The fifth edition of the Ankole Cup started on June 6 with 13 districts competing. The tournament is aimed at promoting grassroots football and identifying local talent.

Each participating district was required to register 25 players, including at least 20 natives of the district.
