Tamwesigire: Universities must produce national team players

Tamwesigire noted that if AUUS cannot contribute at least half of the players in national teams, then there is no reason for their participation in sports.

Universities play a big role in nurturing sports talent worldwide, and Ugandan universities should follow suit.

Former Commissioner for Sports in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Dan Tamwesigire, made this observation in his keynote address at the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) 7th Forum, held at Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Mbarara.

Tamwesigire noted that if AUUS cannot contribute at least half of the players in national teams, then there is no reason for their participation in sports.

"To date, universities should be contributing the largest number of athletes to national teams," Tamwesigire said.

He urged AUUS leadership to encourage research in sports to enhance athlete performance at different levels.

He also emphasised branding and strategising on sponsorship by involving potential sponsors in their activities.

"In such forums, invite your potential sponsors to be part of the discussions and see how you can place your brand on top and attract sponsorship," he said.

He further commended AUUS leadership for creating such platforms to empower students and help university leadership understand the power of sports.
