SYSTM Elite Basketball Camp identifies three Ugandan kids for US colleges

Three Ugandan basketball teenagers have earned opportunities to develop their talent in the US after impressing at the SYSTM Elite Camp, held in partnership with the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) at Lugogo Indoor Arena on August 26.

The one-day talent identification and scouting camp, organised by US-based SYSTM Sports, aims to discover, develop, and create pathways for emerging Ugandan and African basketball talent.

Junior Silverbacks’ Evans Shyaka, HB Academy and Emma High School’s Orom Khor, and St. Michael High School’s Pierre Laurent Rwuhiriro, who featured for Uganda at the recent U18 Zone Five Championship in Rwanda, were selected by a panel of coaches that included Albert Aciko, Henrsion Mbazira, and Henry Malinga, who were engaged by Duncan Mutembani, a partner with SYSTM Sports, and SYSTM Sports President Dimitrios Seymour to identify promising young players with the potential to benefit from the camp.

Seymour said their main goal is to help as many talented young athletes as possible come to the United States and Canada to play prep school and high school basketball on scholarships.

“We want to serve as a connection, bringing over kids with elite talent who deserve to be noticed by coaches,” Seymour said. “Uganda has had so much talent for years, and you can see it with the national U16, U18, and men's teams consistently doing well in qualifiers and AfroBasket tournaments.

Uganda is in a great spot in East Africa to become the next big center for African basketball. So, my aim is really to create as many chances as I can. I was in Nigeria earlier this year and also visited Gambia and Ghana to run basketball camps. This is our final camp of the year, and I wanted to make it a memorable one," Seymour stated.

He noted that the younger the players, the more opportunities they have to keep learning and growing.

“This isn't just about improving your skills but also about building a strong mentality, which is really crucial. I believe that for many players who make it to the NBA, their skill levels are quite alike. Their mindset and attitude really set them apart. That's why I'm focused on finding talented kids at a very young age, even before they start high school, like in ninth or tenth grade. This gives them plenty of time to come to the U.S. or Canada. There, they can not only get used to the fast pace of the game but also enhance their abilities with experienced NBA trainers, all while receiving a good education.” 

He said he was impressed with the level of talent exhibited at the camp and advised them to keep believing in themselves as they continue working on their craft.
