Patrick Sumata and Eva Asasira emerged winners of the third American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Golf Championship held at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa on June 4, each securing 44 and 40 points, respectively.

The one-day tournament also coincided with “Freedom 250,” the official United States initiative marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Both players, competing off handicaps 18 and 36, respectively, expressed excitement over their performances.

“I feel excited. I don't know how to feel right now, but I am overwhelmed,” Sumata said.

“The course is quite dry at the moment, but it plays well, and the balls are flying. Since it was Stableford, my focus was on making pars and, at worst, bogeys on each hole. That strategy helped me achieve this result.”

He added: “I expected maybe a podium finish, but I didn't expect to win overall. I got seven pars and six bogeys, which put me in a good position,” said Sumata, who has played golf for about five years.

Asasira, a member of Uganda Golf Club, was playing at Serena for the first time and also emerged as the overall winner after recording several pars during her round.

“This was my first time playing this course, so I didn't expect it. It's a pleasant surprise,” Asasira said.

“I had mixed fortunes with some very good holes and some bad ones, but I managed five pars,” added Asasira, who is in her third year as a golfer.

As champions, both golfers were awarded return air tickets to Doha courtesy of Qatar Airways.

Other winners included Elijah Luutu and Kartic Halai, who topped the men’s Group A and Group B categories with 40 and 42 points respectively. They will receive complimentary accommodation for four guests, including full board meals at Entikko Safari Lodge in Murchison Falls National Park.

In Group A, Ronnie Kasirye (39 points) and Joshua Senabulya (38) finished as runners-up and second runners-up, while William Mpungu (42 points) and Howard Wodomal (40 points) took similar positions in Group B.

In the ladies’ category, Gloria Mbaguta (36 points) and Faith Namara (35 points) led their divisions ahead of Patricia Nakasi (31 points), Katie Kabenge (29 points), Primrose Kobusingye (35 points) and Shallom Kayenje (30 points).
