St Mary's Kitende dominate USSSA Ball Games II with three trophies

St Mary's Boarding School Kitende netball captain Teopisata Aceng believes that staying united and trusting the team's system was the difference that enabled her side to defeat a challenging Buddo SS in this year's national championships, which came to a climax on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

Buddo SS, which had defeated St Mary's Kitende 27-25 during the 2025 National Ball Games II in Tororo, could not repeat the feat this time around, losing 22-18 to the Kitende side.

"It was a tough game because St Mary's Kitende came with a lot of energy, which we struggled to put them off in the second quarter. We stayed together, trusted our system, and fought until the end," said Aceng after inspiring her team to victory in the netball finals at Gulu High School in Gulu City on Friday.

Aceng believes the team's next objective is to focus on retaining the international trophy they won during the FEASSSA Games in Kakamega, as the side is set to compete in Morogoro, Tanzania, from August 12 to 23.

The national championship, which ran from July 8 to 17 and was co-hosted at Sacred Heart Girls SS and Gulu High School, saw several schools emerge as title winners across various disciplines.

Among the champions were St Mary's Boarding School, Bukedea Comprehensive School, Mbogo High School, Wampeewo Ntake, St Noa Girls, and Nkoma SS.

St Mary's Boarding School emerged as the biggest winner of the USSSA Ball Games II and Athletics FEASSA Qualifiers, claiming three overall trophies in netball, basketball, and woodball. The championship attracted 10,181 athletes competing in 25 disciplines, including netball, volleyball, handball, rugby 7s, basketball 3x3, and athletics.

Other notable winners included Amus College School, which won the CAF Football trophy for both boys and girls, and the U-15 girls handball trophy, while Wampewo Ntake took the boys' trophy. Empower International Academy won lacrosse gold medals for boys, while Bombo Army took the girls' category. St Henry's College Kitovu and St Andrew Kagwa won chess trophies for boys and girls, respectively.

Scrabble trophies were won by Rev. Jabuloni Isoke Memorial College and Wampeewo Ntake, while Mukono King's High School and Standard High School Zaana claimed the beach soccer titles. Makerere College School and Jinja SS won rugby 7s for boys and girls, respectively.

In athletics, Acholi Zone finished in first position with 287 points, followed by Bukedi Zone with 211 points, and Sebei Zone in third with 120 points.

The event was closed by Duncans Mugumya, the Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports at USSSA, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang. Mugumya commended the games for following the Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines on using bonafide athletes during the championship.

"We are happy to see you develop new talents. We have done our level best to ensure that every learner gets involved in sports," he said.

USSSA's Justas Mugisha encouraged athletes to maintain discipline for the sake of their future careers.

"Discipline has been good despite a few cases that were well handled by the disciplinary committee. We are working so hard to eliminate non-bonafide players so that we can only have genuine players," Mugisha added.

The top three schools per discipline in either gender were rewarded with medals (gold, silver, and bronze), with trophies awarded to the champions and medals to each Most Valuable Player (MVP) per sport.
