The Cricket Cranes shook off fatigue and the bruises of their eight-wicket loss to Namibia A on Wednesday to inflict their own punishment on the hosts Thursday, winning by seven wickets at FNB NCG.
It was a victory built on the enduring brilliance of Henry Ssenyondo, who took 3/21 in four overs as Namibia, who won the toss and were put in to bat, were restricted to 137/7 in 20 overs.
Kenneth Waiswa took 2/22 in five overs, with Joseph Baguma adding a wicket for Riazat Shah and his men. Cosmas Kyewuta did not take a wicket, but he had the best economy of any Ugandan bowler, recording a maiden in the three overs he bowled, which came at the cost of 13 runs.
Leicher Dylan and Green Zane were Namibia’s top scorers with 34 runs apiece.
For Uganda’s chase, the heavy lifting was done by skipper Riazat Shah, who came in the middle order for this game, having stepped in as first drop, with little effect, during Wednesday’s loss. Shah scored a match-best 46 runs, Gerald Olipa had 39, Simon Ssesazi 20, Anais Baig 19 and Robison Obuya 14.
The victory handed Steven Tikolo his first victory of his third stint as Uganda coach.
“We learnt a lot from our shortcomings yesterday,” Tikolo said post-match. “The bowlers were incisive, and the batters, especially the top order, set it up well. The captain was there at the end to seal it.”
