State Minister for Sports Hamson Obua has commended the organisers of the Karamoja Games for the great initiative.

Obua made the commendation in a meeting with the Patron of the Games Rtd Cpt. Yuventine Adyeda and chairman Richard Okot who briefed him about the games and plans for this year.

“This is a very good initiative aimed at preaching peace and unity using sports in the region and as a government, we have to support it,” Obua said.

“I also recommend that the minister in charge of Karamoja should incorporate these games in his programs as another way of bringing peace to the people of the region in particular and Uganda in general,” he said.

The chairman of the games Okot added that they are also seeking guidance from the Ministry of Health to see how they can organise the event successfully.
 
In 2019, the first lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janat Kataha Museveni officially launched the Games that have football, athletics, woodball, netball, and volleyball.

The third edition of the Karamoja Games this year in Nakapiripirit district are expected to be bigger and better.

The chairman-elect Abim district who is the patron of the Games Rtd Captain Yuventine Adyeda added that they are working together with other district leaders to have the games held every September.

“Our people are yearning for these games because last year, they didn’t take place because of the coronavirus pandemic outbreak. We have started plans to have them this year in a bigger style,” Adyeda said.

Karamoja region comprising nine districts that include, Moroto, Abim, Nakapiripirit, Kaabong, Nabilatuk, Amudat, Napak, Kotido, and Karenga have been hard hit by insecurity caused by the cattle rustling.
