LUWERO - Soroti city’s young athletes have returned home in triumph after an impressive showing at the 2024 National Primary Schools Athletics and Special Needs Championship held in Luwero district.
The delegation of 34 learners from various government primary schools in Soroti brought home seven medals – two gold, four silver, and one bronze – from the event hosted at Luwero Secondary School.
Outstanding performances
According to the Soroti city sports officer, Okwii Egote Edward, the team displayed exceptional discipline and talent throughout the championship.
"Our athletes were focused and well-prepared. We are proud of their performance," Egote said.
Among the standout performers were Ojore Silas from Teso Boarding Primary School, who won gold in the 200m race, and Akurut Bridget from Pioneer Primary School, who also claimed gold in the 800m event.
Special needs athletes recognised
Soroti City also celebrated success in the Special Needs category. Olinga Samuel, a pupil with hearing impairment from Soroti Demonstration School, won a silver medal in shot put.
Egote praised the inclusion of children with special needs in national competitions, saying it was vital for promoting equity in sports.
"These learners can compete just like anyone else. Their courage and effort are inspiring," he said.
Support from city leadership
The Soroti city education department, in collaboration with school administrators, mobilised resources to ensure learners were equipped and accompanied by coaches, teachers, and medical personnel.
City education officer Charles Omadi lauded the achievements and called for more investment in school sports.
"These results show what our children can achieve with support. We need to invest more in physical education and talent development," Omadi said.
He also revealed plans to lobby for improved sports facilities in public primary schools, including proper training grounds and equipment.
Looking ahead
Parents, teachers, and local leaders gathered at Soroti City Hall to welcome the team upon their return.
The success has inspired excitement among pupils across the city, with several schools pledging to boost their athletics programmes in preparation for next year’s competitions.
