Uganda Silverbacks' promising young talent, Michael Makumbi, has tragically passed away in Canada at the age of 22.
Makumbi was part of the team that represented Uganda at the FIBA 3x3 Youth Nations League Africa, held in Uganda in 2024.
The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) announced his death.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Michael Makumbi,” FUBA said.
“His contribution to the Silverbacks and his talent on the court will never be forgotten.”
“We mourn the loss of such a promising young player and send our deepest condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement added.
Born and raised in Uganda, Makumbi attended Ndejje Senior Secondary School from 2016 to 2021.
After completing his studies, he moved to Canada to pursue his dreams both on and off the court.
His sudden death, caused by a blood clot, has drawn attention to the risks of such health issues, even among young and fit athletes.
Similar cases have been seen with top sports stars, including NBA players Victor Wembanyama and Damian Lillard, who were both diagnosed with blood clots earlier this year.
