The weather in Scotland and the United Kingdom in general could play a decisive role in how well Uganda’s She Cranes perform at the Celtic Cup, which begins tomorrow in Glasgow.
The team is no stranger to winter conditions, but their last outing in the UK in January proved challenging. Beyond struggling to adapt to the cold, several players were struck by illness, leaving key positions weakened and affecting their overall performance.
This time, however, team manager Alice Alweny believes lessons have been learned.

“Once bitten, twice shy. We learned our lesson the last time we went to the UK. This time we are doing everything in our power to stay healthy and to be ready to play,” Alweny said.
As in previous tours, the team will receive winter gear upon arrival in the UK, courtesy of kit sponsors Gilbert. Players are also encouraged to carry personal warm clothing to better withstand the freezing conditions expected this week. The plan is for the squad to arrive in Scotland on Sunday, rest fully on Monday, and play a friendly match before opening their Celtic Cup campaign on Wednesday.
Having endured the “good, bad, and ugly” of winter in past competitions, the She Cranes are now more experienced in managing the do’s and don’ts of playing in cold climates.
Despite the challenges, Alweny remains confident in her team’s ability.
“The team is very ready. The only thing they are going for in Scotland is to pick a trophy. The girls look the part and will be in high spirits,” she stated.
Uganda will kick off their Celtic Cup campaign against Namibia.
