Uganda Premier League side BUL FC have confirmed the return of experienced coach Alex Isabirye as the club’s new head coach on a two-year renewable contract.

The Eastern Giants announced Isabirye’s appointment just 12 days after parting ways with Abbey Kikomeko Bogere, with the club confirming that he assumed his duties immediately.

“BUL Football Club is pleased to confirm that Coach Alex Isabirye has re-joined the Eastern Giants as the team manager on a two-year renewable contract,” the statement read.

“He comes in as a replacement for the recently released Abbey Kikomeko Bogere.”

This marks Isabirye’s third stint at BUL. His first spell at the club was between 2015 and 2016, before he returned in April 2021 and went on to guide BUL to their historic Stanbic Uganda Cup triumph in 2022.

He also led the club to its first-ever CAF Confederation Cup appearance.

In March 2023, Isabirye left BUL to join Vipers SC, where he won a league and Uganda Cup double in the same season. He later took charge of URA FC but was recently relieved of his duties.

The CAF A-licensed coach now faces the task of turning around BUL’s poor start to the season. The club is 12th on the Uganda Premier League table with 10 points from 11 matches and is on a five-match losing run.

Isabirye is also a former Uganda Cup winner with SC Victoria University and a league champion with URA FC.

His coaching career has included spells at Nyamityobora, Kyetume, Busoga United, Tooro United, Express FC, Somalia’s Horseed FC and the Buganda Province team in the FUFA Drum.

His immediate focus will be BUL’s remaining first-round fixtures, starting with an away match against Calvary on January 7.

Other fixtures include SC Villa at home on January 22, Lugazi away on January 27 and UPDF away on January 30.

BUL FC last lifted silverware in June 2022 after defeating Vipers SC 3-1 in the Stanbic Uganda Cup final in Masindi, securing the first major trophy in the club’s history.
