Uganda's sole representative on the Sunshine Tour, Ronald Rugumayo, achieved his finest performance to date after securing a joint second-place finish at the Betway Big Easy Tour 8, held at Killarney Country Club on Thursday.

Rugumayo carded a 5-under 205 across 54 holes, sharing second place with South Africa's Dillon Germshuys. Both players finished three shots behind the tournament winner, fellow South African Daniel Cronje, who claimed victory with an 8-under 202.

Throughout the three rounds on the par-70 course, the Ugandan golfer recorded 15 birdies. He began with an opening round of 68, followed by a second-round 70, before closing with a 3-under 67 to secure a substantial payout from the sh30m prize pool.

This was the fourth time from six event on tour this year that Rugumayo was making the cut on tour following earlier successes in the Limpopo Championship at the Euphoria Golf & Lifestyle Estate; in the Vodacom Origins of Golf at the Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate course, last month which he followed with an 11th-place finish in the Betway Big Easy Blu Label Unlimited Invitational 4 at the Reading Country Club in Alberton.

Rugumayo finished joint 36th out of 51 golfers who made the cut to partake of the sh485m prize money in the event that attracted 123 players in Mookgophong.

“What a week at Killarney! It was a good fight out there and I’m proud of the performance I have put up despite the slow start,” the MTN and Johnnie Walker-sponsored Rugumayo said.

“I was swinging well, I had so many good shots and so many good putts and my game plan was to hit many greens in regulation as I could and to stay in the zone, stay present and approach every shot with the best version of myself,” Rugumayo stated.

Rugumayo is now expected to replicate the same performance in Pretoria for the Big Easy Tour 9 at Silver Lakes Golf Estate, October 3-5 before he heads back onto the Sunshine Tour for the Hyundai Open at Ebotse Links in Johannesburg, October 6-9.
