RezLife Saints Basketball Club has big ambitions for next season

When RezLife Saints exited the playoff semifinals in a 3-0 sweep to the 10-time champion City Oilers, the scoreline failed to capture the true temperature inside Lugogo Arena.

Anyone watching Game 3 saw Saints push the champions into a frantic 70-67 finish.

Having already snapped the Oilers' long unbeaten run during the regular season, Saints proved that the gap in depth and postseason experience is closing fast.

For RezLife Saints guard Azariah Kyambadde, that playoff battle was a crucial lesson in identity and execution under pressure.

"In the first half of Game 1 of the semifinals, we had a disappointing start. We were playing a bit panicked and rushed," Azariah admits.

"However, during halftime, our coaching staff reminded us to stay true to our play style and identity. Coming out of halftime and onward, I believe we looked like true champions. We fought our way back from a 20-point deficit and put significant pressure on the City Oilers," Kyambadde told Visio Sports.

Kyambadde further mentioned, "Aside from petty mistakes through the next two games, I believe the first half of Game 1 taught us our most important lesson: that no matter what the moment brings, we must stay true to our identity, F.I.S.T. (First I See Team), and trust the effort we have put in. That is what elevated us to compete at the level we did this season, and it will continue to elevate us moving forward."

Kyambadde's athletic instinct was forged early. Raised in a household where performance was standard, sports was always a core language.

That foundation carried him from casual pick-up games at 14 to high school ball in the United States, where he learned systems and technical strategy, before returning home to join Saints, a program co-founded by his parents, David and Aimee Kyambadde.

Wearing his family's surname on the floor comes with inevitable public scrutiny, but he addresses the outside noise with complete maturity.

"Of course, there are pressures involved with being a part of a team that is operated so close to home. You have questions of whether or not people see 'Kyambadde' on your back and think, 'Oh, we know how he got here.' At the end of the day, none of those things truly matter, and I just aspire to be the best player and teammate I can be.

"The day that it is determined that I am unfit to be a part of the Saints roster, I would step down to make way for the next era of Ugandan talent. Saints should be a platform to elevate Ugandan basketball forward, not a billboard for any one name," Kyambadde stated.

Looking ahead, he is focused on sharpening his technical execution and leadership to push the team further.

"As we continue to elevate our professionalism and our play, we aspire to also elevate those who are reached by us. A young basketball player should be able to look at us as a program to follow for inspiration. Next year is a continuation of that process, along with higher expectations for regular season and playoff success."

From a management standpoint, the club's transformation over the past four years has laid the operational backbone for this postseason run. Team Owner and Manager Aimee Kyambadde notes that Saints' rise from Division 1 champions to top-flight contenders was built on deliberate structural changes.

"RezLife Saints was started about 13 years ago under Resurrection Life Ministries," Kyambadde explains.

"It bounced between Division 1 and 2 for nearly a decade until about 4 years ago, when there was a shift in management and leadership structure. Saints then was appointed to their second ever NBL position and was then relegated to Division 1 in the same season. The next season, we won the 2024 Division 1 championship. In the following NBL season, we placed 8th on the NBL table, and now we placed 3rd."

Aimee Kyambadde emphasizes that Saints operates with a broader purpose that extends beyond simple box scores, focusing heavily on character and player development.

"Over the past few seasons, we have changed leadership structure. Our focus is more centered on the lives of our players and coaching team than the game alone. We emphasize team-mindedness, personal and corporate maturity, commitment, and accountability. Our aim is to build an elite team that is highly skilled and competitive on court as well as positively influential in their own lives and communities," she added.

Reflecting on the loss to the Oilers, management views the playoff experience not as a failure, but as essential data to guide their next steps.

"Every game reveals strengths and weaknesses in both teams, in each player, and even in the coaches. Part of our game scouting process, before and after games, is to analyze ourselves, our stats, our game video, and our execution of strategy so we continue to improve. This process has worked well and has helped increase players' overall game IQ."

The objective for next season for RezLife Saints is to build depth, professionalize operations, and return with championship intentions.

"RezLife Saints as a club aims to professionalize within the sport more each season," the team manager concludes.

"Next season's ambitions are continued internal growth, a strong committed and skilled team building upon our current foundation, increased community engagement, building a greater fanbase and, of course, finals and a championship."
