Preparations heat up for National Sprint Championship

Preparations for the opening round of the National Sprint Championship are in high gear, with drivers fine-tuning their machines ahead of the highly anticipated event scheduled for July 5 at the Garuga Race Track.
Among the competitors is Doreen Asiimwe, currently the only female driver in the championship, who will line up in her Subaru CG8 against a field of more than 60 male drivers. Despite the challenge, Asiimwe says she is ready to test herself against the best.
"I am still adapting to this car. Moving from a Toyota FX to a Subaru and especially a left-hand-drive machine, has not been easy, but I am learning every day," she said.
Fresh from competing in the third round of the National Rally Championship in Masaka and Sembabule, Asiimwe is eager to measure herself against the sport's seasoned competitors rather than fellow newcomers.
"I don't want to battle upcoming drivers. My wish is to be matched against experienced drivers such as Kalule so that I can learn from them and improve my skills," she added.
The flamboyant driver believes regular participation is key to building confidence and understanding her new machine. This, she says, explains her decision to feature in as many events as possible this season. "The more time I spend behind the wheel, the better I understand the car. Every event gives me valuable experience," she noted.
Asiimwe also used the opportunity to appeal for sponsorship, particularly from women-led organizations and businesses across the country. "I have seen many successful women-led companies in Uganda. I appeal to them to support my journey because motorsport is exciting, but competing against men requires significant resources and commitment," she said.
The National Sprint Championship title was won by Ronald Ssebuguzi in 2025, and the multiple-time champion is expected to return this season in a bid to defend his crown.
With determination, courage and a growing passion for motorsport, Asiimwe hopes to make her mark in a championship traditionally dominated by men.
