Sydney Gongodyo, a beloved forward for the national 15s team, the Rugby Cranes, and a loyal stalwart of the Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club, was tragically beaten to death on Friday, June 5, 2026, in the Kampala suburb of Bukoto. He was 27 years old.
Gongodyo was more than a player; he was a fierce competitor on the pitch and a gentle soul off it. Known for his relentless work rate, powerful scrums, and unwavering commitment to the jersey, he had become a cornerstone of both club and country. His passion for the game inspired teammates and earned the respect of opponents across the league.

Beyond his athletic prowess, Gongodyo was a friend, a son, and a mentor to many young players coming through the ranks. His sudden and violent death has sent shockwaves through the Ugandan rugby community, leaving a void that will be deeply felt.
As we remember his remarkable journey, from his early days at Pirates to representing Uganda on the international stage, we honour a life dedicated to the sport he loved. Sydney Gongodyo may be gone, but his legacy will live on in every try scored in his memory and every young player who dreams of following in his footsteps.
