Peter Onzima scored a decisive goal in the 83rd minute to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Mbarara City over Wakiso Giants on Tuesday at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Grounds in Wakiso District.

The win lifted Mbarara City six points clear of the relegation zone, offering a vital cushion with only three matches remaining in the Uganda Premier League season.

Heading into the clash, just three points separated the two relegation-threatened sides, with both desperate for a win to bolster their survival hopes.

Wakiso Giants started brightly and were awarded a penalty just three minutes into the match. However, Marvin Oshaba’s spot-kick was saved by Mbarara goalkeeper Aaron Icumar, setting the tone for a tense encounter.

The hosts were dealt a major blow midway through the first half when defender Mtita received a straight red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity after bringing down Henry Kitegenyi.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Wakiso continued to threaten, particularly through forward Hudson Mbalire. But Icumar remained solid in goal, producing several key saves to keep the visitors in the game.

In the final 20 minutes, Mbarara City turned up the pressure. Henry Kitegenyi, Seiri Arigumaho, and Paul Busolo continuously tested the Wakiso defence. Their persistence paid off when Kitegenyi delivered a teasing cross that Onzima finished with precision, sealing a crucial victory.

At the final whistle, Mbarara City players and traveling fans erupted in celebration, while frustration boiled over among Wakiso Giants supporters, many of whom directed their anger at head coach Steven Bengo.

The defeat leaves Wakiso Giants stuck on 20 points, with relegation now a looming threat as only three fixtures remain. Mbarara City, now on 26 points, need just one more win to mathematically secure their top-flight status.

In other action, Bright Stars were relegated following a 1-0 defeat to UPDF in Bombo, joining bottom-placed Mbale Heroes in next season’s FUFA Big League.

The Uganda Premier League features 16 teams, with the bottom three automatically relegated each season. With Mbale Heroes (16th) and Bright Stars (15th) already down, 14th-placed Wakiso Giants are now in serious danger of joining them if results don’t turn in their favor.
