Ntinda School for the Deaf gets new artificial turf football pitch

Pupils and staff of Ntinda School for the Deaf have more reason to celebrate International Week of the Deaf 2026 after Tecno Mobile Uganda refurbished the school’s football pitch into a quality playing facility.

Under its Dream Africa on the Field initiative, the mobile phone company installed 1,000 square metres of artificial turf, providing the school with a safer and more suitable environment for sports.

Doreen Agondeze, the headteacher of Ntinda School for the Deaf, thanked Tecno for the support, saying the facility will benefit learners through inter-class competitions, talent development and teamwork.

“With this football pitch, our learners are going to benefit so much from using it. It is a safe space for them to play soccer, play other games, develop social skills among other benefits. We are so grateful to Tecno for putting up this pitch for us,” Agondeze said.

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Deputy Executive Director Kigenyi, who was the chief guest at the event, officially launched the facility and thanked Tecno for supporting the school.

Kigenyi encouraged the school to make full use of the pitch, saying sports help keep learners active and engaged, which can also contribute to better classroom performance.

“The new curriculum strongly emphasises giving learners an opportunity to learn practical skills. Giving children an opportunity to play football is one way of developing practical skills,” Kigenyi said.

“This new pitch will provide a safer and more accessible sporting environment for our learners as well as the communities around,” he added.

Edinah Ahurira, Tecno’s public relations manager, said the company chose Ntinda School for the Deaf because it wanted children with disabilities to have equal opportunities to participate in sport.

“We chose Ntinda School for the Deaf because it has children with disabilities who also deserve opportunities like children without disabilities to have their own pitch where they can play soccer in a safe place and develop their skills,” Ahurira said.

“Football is an inclusive sport. All children should be given equal opportunities, and we believe it will benefit other children in the surrounding areas,” she added.

The project is part of Tecno’s Dream Africa on the Field initiative, which was launched in 2024 in collaboration with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The five-year programme aims to refurbish 100 football pitches across the continent as part of efforts to improve sports infrastructure and create better opportunities for young people to participate in sport.
