2024 AFRICAN NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP
TUESDAY (AUGUST 12) GROUP D RESULTS
🇸🇳 Senegal 1-1 Congo 🇨🇬
🇸🇩 Sudan 4-0 Nigeria 🇳🇬
Sudan produced the biggest margin of victory so far at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) with a 4-0 win over Nigeria on Tuesday (August 12) in Zanzibar, a result that eliminated the 2018 runner-up from the tournament at the group stage.
The huge win hoisted the Falcons of Jediane to the summit of Group D, level on four points with Senegal but bettering the reigning champions on goal difference.
Senegal were held 1-1 by Congo in the earlier group game at the same Amaan Stadium off the coast of East Africa.
The final round of matches of this group next Tuesday (August 19) can still have any one of the current top three teams advance to the knockout stage.
Here are the permutations:
▪️ Leaders Sudan will progress if they avoid defeat against Senegal. That means the former only need a draw to make it to the quarter-finals.
▪️ Senegal will be through if they beat Sudan. Any other result can still take them through depending on the result of the other group game.
▪️ Congo will advance of they beat Nigeria and Sudan beat Senegal.
▪️ Sudan and Senegal will advance, regardless of their result, if Nigeria beat or draw with Congo.
It is the first time that Africa's flagship biennial tournament for exclusively home-based players is hosted by three countries: Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
Now in its second week, the competition has seen 47 goals scored in 22 group games, with six players (two goals each) leading the goal-scoring chart. They are Uganda's Allan Okello, Kenya's Austin Odhiambo, Tanzania's Clement Mzize, Angola's Kaporal, South Africa's Thabiso Kutumela and Sudan's Abdel Raouf.
Raouf scored his two goals in the second half against Nigeria on Tuesday night.
By the time his brace arrived in the 55th and 62nd minutes, his Sudanese side had already been gifted the opener by Leonard Ngenge's blunder when the Ikorodu City FC defender turned the ball into his own net 25 minutes into the game.
Walieldin Khedr had then converted from the spot just before half time to improve Sudan's lead against a hapless Nigerian side. Raouf then completed the rout after the interval to condemn the CHAN Eagles to an early exit with one game to spare.
They may be out now but Nigeria's final game against Congo next week will have a huge say on who advances to the knockout stage and who joins them on their way out.
Meanwhile, action resumes today (Wednesday), with the attention turning to Group B at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Tanzania.
Madagascar, in fourth, will be hoping to revive their qualification hopes when they face off with bottom side Central African Republic in the earlier kickoff (5pm EAT). Later, second-placed Mauritania will join already-qualified co-hosts Tanzania in the quarters if they beat Burkina Faso, who are third, and Madagascar fail to beat Central African Republic.
All to play for.
