Nasuna, Masiga lead UNIK to double triumph at Kyambogo

Teddy Nassuna and Jackson Masiga delivered masterpiece performances on Sunday, shouldering the University of Kisubi (UNIK) to a historic double victory.

The victory ended Ndejje Corporate and the Ministry of Public Service's (MOPS) long-standing dominance in corporate woodball.

The tightly contested season opener, held at Kyambogo University grounds, saw Nasuna card an impressive 118 strokes to claim the Women's Singles title.

She beat the MOPS duo of Patience Tusubira (126 strokes) and Pincline Atwine (134 strokes), who came second and third, respectively.

Nasuna attributed her breakthrough to a rigorous personal training schedule aimed at securing domestic and international honors this season.

"I started playing this sport in 2022, but regular, intensive training at the beginning of this year is what has driven me to this success," Nasuna stated.

"My focus now turns to the next leg. More importantly, I am targeting the national league and earning a call-up to the Uganda National Team," she added.

In the men's division, Eric Enabu of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) cruised to victory in the Singles category with a clinical 103 strokes. UNIK's Jackson Masiga finished second with 115 strokes, while Peter Mutyaba was third with 117 strokes.

The combined individual brilliance of Nasuna and Masiga shouldered UNIK to the summit of both the men's and women's team standings.

In the women's team division, UNIK pooled 557 strokes to edge out runners-up MOPS (576 strokes) by 21 strokes, while UNEB came third with 605 strokes.

The Entebbe Road-based institution completed its clean sweep in the men's category, returning 469 strokes to finish 20 strokes ahead of the Ministry of Public Service (489 strokes), while Ndejje Corporate rounded out the top three with 508 strokes.

Uganda Woodball Federation (UWBF) President Paul Mark Kayongo lauded the rapid growth of corporate woodball across the country, urging more corporate organizations to embrace the sport.

"I am highly impressed by the competitive speed at which the sport is growing, particularly within our corporate tier," Kayongo remarked.

"Corporate woodball offers working professionals an opportunity to actively engage in competitive sports, leading to improved health and body fitness."

Kayongo added that bigger opportunities await local corporate players on the continental front.

"Encourage your friends and colleagues to join. With the active rejuvenation of the Africa Woodball Federation, our corporate players will soon get massive opportunities to compete on the international stage," he said.
