Uganda’s three-member women’s team aims for a top-three finish at this year’s All-Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), to be held at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, Nigeria, from November 2 to 7.
Coach Flavia Namakula has set this top-three target for her team: Judith Komugisha, Harsshitha Loganathan, and Keisha Kagoro, Uganda’s representatives at the 24th edition of the championship.
NCS General Secretary-Technical Milton Chebet, accompanied by Sports Officer and liaison Charles Cherop, officially flagged off the team at NCS headquarters on Thursday. Uganda will compete against golfers from 21 nations in this biennial event.
Namakula said her team is strong, with a balanced mix of experienced players and emerging talent, showing that the player development system from junior to national level is effective.
“We recently completed an intensive week-long training camp, but our preparations continue. I work with these players every day,” Namakula said.
“Daily monitoring is essential, as the one-week camp was designed for fine-tuning rather than intensive training. I focused on preparing the players while ensuring they remain fresh for the competition,” Namakula stated.
She emphasised that training has focused on course management, mental routines, the short game, and other key areas. She assured that the team is in excellent condition, mentally prepared, and focused on achieving a top-three finish.
“South Africa and Morocco are our main competitors, but we must remain focused on our strategy and objectives to secure a top-three position or potentially win the tournament. I extend my gratitude to the parents, families, clubs, and coaches who have supported and developed these players.”
NCS’s Chebet encouraged the team to compete with confidence, discipline, and determination and uphold high standards of sportsmanship.
He encouraged the team to perform well, make Uganda proud, and serve as role models for aspiring young girls. He also thanked the Uganda Golf Union, coaches, sponsors, and parents for their support.
He noted that the government recognises sport as a powerful tool for national development, fostering employment, talent development, and international recognition.
“On behalf of the National Council of Sports, we commit to working with the Uganda Golf Union to develop golf at all levels, from grassroots to elite competitions. We wish you a safe trip, a successful tournament, and an outstanding performance.”
Brian Mugisha, representing the Uganda Golf Union, thanked NCS, UGU, the parents, and the coach for their contributions to the sport’s development.
This is significant for us as it reflects the progress we have made in developing golf. Our teams now include both juniors and seniors, including the current squad. As a union, we are building a system to ensure the sport’s growth nationwide. Following guidance from the National Council of Sports, we are expanding our efforts to reach all districts across the country,” Mugisha stated.
