Ugandan table tennis star Jemima Nakawala kept her hopes of qualification from Group 8 open after registering her first win.

Nakawala defeated Ghanaian Joanita Barteye 3-0 in straight sets (11-6, 11-8, 11-6) to maintain second spot in Group 8. Nakawala dominated proceedings from the first round, winning it 11-6.

The Ghanaian tried to exert pressure on Nakawala in the second round, but she kept pressing her opponent, forcing her to make late errors that brought Nakawala back into the game to win the second round 11-8.

Nakawala will now look to win the final group game against India's Das Syndrela today if she is to make it to the round of 16.

Joseph Ssebatindira's chances of qualification from the group stage were dented after suffering a second consecutive loss to Venezuela's Vegas Jonathan 3-1.

Mwase, Inhensiko impress in 100m freestyle

Arthur Mwase and Peterson Inhensiko put up Uganda's best performance so far in the 100m freestyle heats after finishing second and third respectively.

Mwase came second behind Puerto Rico's Alonso Martinez after posting 54:47, while Inhensiko posted 56:25 seconds. In the women's 200m breaststroke, Mbanga Zara Marie finished sixth in heat two after posting 2:56:89 in a heat that was won by Japan's Ishihama Mana. Mbanga, however, picked some positives from the race after improving her time by three seconds.

Rugby sevens team suffer group losses

The rugby sevens team suffered three consecutive losses against two former Olympic champions. In the first game, Argentina defeated Uganda 49-0 before France added another big loss for the Ugandan side with a 59-0 victory. Uganda tried to contain Japan in their final game, but the Japanese proved superior after the first five minutes of the game. Japan led the game 17-7 in the first half, but in the second half the Japanese ran riot against Uganda, winning the contest 41-7.
