Uganda's welterweight Vanessa Nagawa will leave this year's inaugural Africa Boxing Championship under the World Boxing (WB) setup with at least a silver medal after punching her way to the final.

This comes after her elimination of Algeria's Rouaz Doua during their semi-final contest yesterday evening.

Nagawa's progress to the final means she is the first female boxer at the championship to punch her way to the final and only the second Ugandan female boxer to reach the Africa Boxing Championship final, after welterweight Erinah Namutebi in Yaounde, Cameroon, in 2023.

The stylish boxer from musician King Saha's 'Kings Love Entertainment Crew' told Vision Sport of her ambition to return home with gold.

"I thank God for this victory because it wasn't an easy one. My focus now is to go on and win a gold medal in the final," noted Nagawa, who plies her trade with Katabi Boxing Club on Entebbe Road.

Her performance on her debut with the Bombers team isn't a surprise to many.

She is arguably not only Uganda's current best female boxer in open boxing, with an unbeaten run in the Uganda Boxing Champions League in the elite category, but also a 2025 National Open Boxing Championship gold medallist.

In other bouts of the day, light flyweight Rashidah Nakawoza unanimously lost to Kenya's Grace Athieno, as did featherweight Peninah Amoding to Algeria's Nour Malak.

By press time, other Ugandan boxers, including welterweight Erinah Namutebi, heavyweight Dianah Atwiine, featherweight Kasim Murungi and super heavyweight Emmanuel Tabule, were yet to enter the ring.
