Muteesa I Royal University achieved their first-ever win in the Pepsi University Football League by defeating Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) 3-0 yesterday at Kirumba grounds in Masaka City.
The Royal Lions, new to the competition this season, had initially suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat away to MUBS, but showcased a convincing performance.
Back home, playing in front of their excited supporters, Muteesa dominated the match from start to finish, with MUST constantly chasing shadows. Geoffrey Sserugo and Francis Bbaale scored in the 34th and 46th minutes, respectively, giving Muteesa a strong 2-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Muteesa continued to press for more goals. Sserugo, Ali Lutwama, and Nicholas Ssenyonjo had good attempts to extend the lead but were unable to convert their chances. Despite several tactical changes by MUST coach Mohamed Kyagambidwa, the team failed to make an impact.
With four minutes remaining, Ibrahim Mubiru sealed the win for Muteesa with a well-placed tap-in, assisted by Patrick Busuulwa, making it 3-0 and sending the home fans into a frenzy. This victory moved Muteesa to second place in the group standings with three points, just one point behind leaders MUBS. MUST remains at the bottom of the three-team group with one point from two matches.
Muteesa tactician George William Ssengabi expressed his excitement and issued a warning to MUBS, who will visit next week. "I want to thank my players, coaching staff, and our fans. We have made history today, and I promise that we are just getting started," Ssengabi noted. "The mission is to qualify for the quarterfinals, which means our remaining two games are must-wins. MUBS, who come here next, should know that we are ready for them."
Today's action continues in Group C with Kabale University hosting Uganda Christian University (UCU) at Kabale sports grounds. Nkumba University are the defending champions.
