Charles Musemeza announced himself on the international scene with a match-best 89 runs as Uganda opened their account in the ILT20 Continental Cup with a convincing 114-run win over Sierra Leone at the Rwanda Cricket Stadium in Kigali today.

Musemeza smashed eight fours and five sixes on the way to his total, accrued off 57 balls, as Uganda raced to 250/3 in 20 overs.

Steven Tikolo selected a squad dominated by young indigenous nationals for the event, a popular choice for a tournament like this where homebred talent has plenty of room to succeed

Talents like Gerald Olipa, who is more established at senior level and showed it with an unbeaten 83 off 34 balls for Uganda, who won the toss and elected to bat at the Rwanda Cricket Stadium.

Robinson Obuya and skipper Riazat Shah (not out) contributed 37 and 32 runs apiece as Uganda’s superiority translated into a comfortable victory, which had to wait for the full quota of Sierra Leone’s overs. Alusine Turay scored a team-best 78 for Sierra Leone, who dropped just four wickets, although they managed just 136 runs in reply.

Juma Miyagi and Kenneth Waiswa combined for those four wickets, which Tikolo will no doubt feel were on the lower side for a side of Uganda’s bowling quality. 

Uganda return to action tomorrow against Botswana, who lost to Rwanda by 55 runs in the opening game of the tournament on Tuesday.
