Dr. Patrice Motsepe, who heads the Confederation of African Football (CAF), said the African Nations Championship (CHAN) is important for developing football talent in Africa.
“CHAN is great for helping football players and young talent grow here in Africa. It will really help African football and CAF competitions be more competitive worldwide,” Motsepe said.
The 2024 CHAN is being hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
“CAF has upped the prize money big time to make the competition better and help local football grow,” he added.
“We’re pumped about the upcoming CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024 and increased the winner's prize to $3.5 million.”
Also, the total prize money for the whole tournament is now $10.4 million, which is up by 32%.
The 2024 event will be the first CHAN hosted by three countries. Games will be held in Kampala, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar.
There's even a brand- trophy for this one. The winners get $3.5 million, second place gets $1.2 million, and the teams in third and fourth place get $700,000 and $600,000, respectively.
Quarter-finalists get $450,000, and teams in the group stage get between $200,000 and $300,000, depending on how they do.
Uganda will host Group C games at Mandela National Stadium (Namboole), starting against Algeria on Monday 4th.
Senegal, who won last time, is in Group D with Nigeria, Congo, and Sudan.
