Kitara FC, reigning Uganda Cup champions for the 2023/24 season, are undergoing a major rebuild after losing a significant number of key players whose contracts expired last month.

The Hoima-based Royals faced a precarious moment, with 14 core players out of contract and longtime club president Deo Kasozi stepping down, marking the end of an era.

Among the most notable departures is Uganda Cranes forward Jude Ssemugabi, who starred at CHAN 2024, scoring against South Africa and helping Uganda reach the quarterfinals for the first time in history.

Goalkeeper Chrispus Kusiima also left, signing with URA FC. Other players who became free agents include Ronald Otti, Titus Ssematimba, Marvin Nyanzi, Benjamin Nyakoojo, Patrick Henry Kaddu, George Ssenkaaba, Kabon Living, Arthur Kiggundu, Moses Sseruyidde, Lazaro Bwambale, Farouk Yawe, and Frank “Zaga” Tumwesigye. Ssemugabi is reportedly linked to South Sudanese champions Jamus, while young prospect Lazaro Muhindo has joined KCCA FC.

With so many exits, Kitara moved swiftly to reinforce the squad ahead of the 2025/26 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season. Management renewed contracts and made strategic signings to stabilize the team. Patrick Kaddu committed to a new two-year deal.

A key figure in Kitara’s rise, Kaddu scored 16 goals in the 2023 FUFA Big League season to secure promotion and returned from Gor Mahia to play a vital role in their debut top-flight campaign. Midfielder Frank “Zaga” Tumwesigye also signed a new contract, and towering defender Benjamin Nyakoojo is expected to finalize his extension soon.

In the transfer market, Kitara made bold moves to bring in experienced talent. Former Uganda Cranes defender Murushid Juuko, who has played for Express, Vipers, Simba SC, and Wydad Casablanca, signed a two-year deal.

Midfielder Gaddafi Wahab, previously with Onduparaka, Wakiso Giants, and NEC, also joined on a two-year contract. The defence was further strengthened with the arrivals of Henry Musisi and Sadiq Ssekyembe from Mbarara City, and Isa Lumu from Express FC.

On the attacking front, Eddy Ssebandeke signed from Express FC, while Kato Samuel, formerly of Soltilo Bright Stars and KCCA FC, was added to the squad. Midfielder Amir Kakomo, who has featured for SC Villa, Gaddafi, and Mbarara City, also joined the team.

Beyond player changes, Kitara revamped its technical bench. George Lutalo has taken over as head coach, while Wasswa Bbosa remains as assistant coach as he prepares for a CAF A Coaching Course. Both signed new two-year deals to lead the club into its next chapter. These leadership shifts follow the departure of club president Deo Kasozi, who leaves behind a legacy of guiding Kitara from the lower leagues to top-tier football.

Last season, Kitara finished seventh in the Uganda Premier League, recording 12 wins, 8 draws, and 10 losses to earn 44 points. They also reached the semifinals of the Uganda Cup, capping off a historic campaign. Now, with a refreshed squad and new leadership, the Royals are gearing up for another competitive season, determined to build on their recent success.
