Young motocross talents are proving that the sport’s future is promising—if well nurtured by the federation.

On Sunday, February 2, 2025, former African champion in the MX 85cc class, Gift Sebuguzi, alongside Ethan Musede (MX65) and Hashim Serwadda (MX1), thrilled fans in Kalisizo, Kyotera, during the opening round of the National Motocross Championship.

Sebuguzi delivered a dominant performance, winning all three heats in the MX125cc class and even lapping his competitors up to third place.

Later, he took on top riders Maxime Van Pee and Hashim Serwadda in the combined MX1 and MX2 races during the final heat of the day.

The most electrifying moment came as Sebuguzi went head-to-head with Van Pee and Serwadda in the combined MX1 and MX2 showdown.

The trio battled fiercely in the opening laps, with Van Pee leading early on. Sebuguzi surged ahead in the following three laps before pulling out, as he was only a guest rider in that category, having registered for MX125cc.

Serwadda ultimately claimed victory in the MX1 category, securing 60 points. Isma Mukiibi finished second with 49 points, while Van Pee settled for third, also with 49 points.

Another thrilling contest unfolded in the MX65cc class, where Larry Ssekamwa, Ethan Musede, and Jude Musede battled for supremacy. Ssekamwa emerged victorious with 57 points, followed by Ethan Musede (54) and Jude Musede (43).

In the 50cc class, Abigail Katende clinched first place with 57 points, while Helena Birungi (52) and Abigail Muwanguzi (43) completed the podium.

Meanwhile, in the 85cc category, Miguel Katende made a strong comeback, overcoming stiff competition from his sibling Jonathan Katende, who finished second, and Ethan Jassa Katek, who placed third with 41 points.

Jonathan Katende later collided with Isaac Mitima at the flying finish, sustaining minor injuries. FMU’s medical team attended to them on-site before Mitima was taken to hospital for further evaluation.

FMU deputy vice president in charge of motorcycling, Arthur Blick Jr, praised the riders’ performances and stressed the need to enhance safety measures for competitors.
