A corporate relay will be the main attraction at the second Matooke Independence Marathon, taking place along the Kampala-Entebbe route on Independence Day, October 9.
Each team will have four runners who will pass the baton along the route. The first runner starts at the Independence Monument in Kampala and hands off at the Kibuye-Seguku hub.
The second runner continues to the Voice Mall in Bwebajja, then the third takes over before the Kitala-Abayita Ababiri station. The final runner finishes at Lake Victoria Primary School in Entebbe. Each participant will run 10.5 km. The relay is open to corporate teams and running clubs, with a trophy for the winners.
This Independence Marathon follows several participants’ participation in the Berlin Marathon last month. The event will also mark 130 years since the first marathon took place in Athens, Greece, and will promote healthy living and patriotism.
Spyridon Louis won the first modern Olympic marathon in Athens in 1896, finishing the 40km course in 2 hours, 58 minutes, and 50 seconds.
The Kampala-based running club organises the K'la-Ebb Monthly Run, covering 27 to 36 km on the second Sunday of each month. The event brings together dedicated professionals who enjoy racing, giving back to the community, and staying fit.
Their efforts go beyond running, as they also take part in community service projects such as planting trees in the Entebbe Botanical Gardens. These activities help support both the community and the environment.
The 42 km race will start at 6:30 am at the Independence Monument in Kampala. The 21 km race will begin at 7:00 am at the Voice Mall in Bwebajja, and the 10 km race will start at Lake Victoria Primary School in Entebbe.
