In a bid to strengthen their junior golf programs and boost their members' playing time, the golf captains of Lira Golf Club, Kinyara, Mbale, and the West Nile Golf Clubs mooted the Upper Nile Golf Series, whose first event took place in Lira on Saturday.
At the end of the day, the Lira golfers emerged as the winners of the inaugural edition, which attracted 62 players, amassing 333 points and beating their Kinyara and West Nile (Arua) counterparts, who scored 327 and 295 points, respectively.
According to the Lira Golf Club lady captain, Grace Obua, the series was mooted after their golfers played against Kinyara's in Masindi in April.
“Our captains, Joshua Odongo (Lira), Moses Enzama (Kinyara), Joseph Okudi (Mbale), and Emmy Arima (Arua), sat and mooted the idea of the inter-club competitions. In April we played in Kinyara and lost, but we avenged the loss on Saturday, so it will continue like that,” Obua said.
She said the next tournament will be played in Arua before the end of the year, before the Mbale leg.
“We want to grow our junior golf development because at these events they are able to play regularly because many cannot afford to travel for the other events outside their clubs. We have recruited many juniors at our various clubs, so we want to keep them engaged,” Obua stated.
The best individual in Lira was Kinyara’s Lydia Shabomwe (45pts), while Namulonge’s Charity Atuhaire scooped the guest winner’s prize.
