WBC-Silver Bridgerweight World Title

W. Kyakonye (UGA) v A. Morejon (CU)

Uganda’s heavyweight Willy ‘The Ring Tiger’ Kyakonye is confident of adding the World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver bridgerweight world title to his growing trophy cabinet when he faces Cuba’s an unbeaten Angelo Morejon this month October 12.

Kyakonye takes on Morejon in a marathon 12 rounds thriller at the prestigious Royal Theatre Carre Arena in Dutch city, Amsterdam with the Ugandan hard puncher ranked 9th and the Cuban 5th by the WBC in the bridgerweight division.

Dubbed the fists of steel, the event marks the 18th edition of the Ben Bril Memorial Boxing Gala named after Ben Bril, the first Dutch boxer in history to represent the Netherlands at the Olympic games, in 1928.

With his renown Dutch coach Vincent Stikkorlorum in his corner and in company of Uganda’s coaching duo of Latif Walugembe (Coach Walu) and Nasser Lule who travelled from Germany and UK respectively, Kyakonye is optimistic the combination gives him a perfect ringside team to put Morejon to the sword.

“I have dreamt of vying for a WBC world title and finally here we go. I have been in intense training for the last three months and the world is set to witness a more ruthless and roaring Ring Tiger than never before.” Kyakonye told Vision Sport.

Kyakonye comes into this blockbuster having won and defended twice the World Boxing Federation (WBF) heavyweight title in 2025 and 2026.

The former national boxing team, the bombers pugilist who won bronze at the 2015 Africa Boxing Championship on top of remaining Uganda’s solitary pugilist to box at the World Series of Boxing (WSB), bosses with a 14-0-0 ring record.

Of his 14 pro victories, 13 have been knockouts underlining how lethal the former Kololo and Lukanga Boxing Clubs knockout specialist is.

Victory over Morejon will propel Kyakonye a place among Uganda’s boxing greats to win world major titles in a four-belt era.

And in doing so, he will join notable Uganda’s World boxing Champions Ayub ‘The Gentleman’ Kalule, John ‘The Beast’ Mugabi, Cornelius Bozza Edwards, Kasim ‘The Dream’ Ouma, Jackson ‘Action’ Asiku and recently Sulaiman ‘The Ruler’ Segawa.

But in Morejon who holds a ring record of 11-0-0 with 8 knockouts, Kyakonye must throw every punch at his disposal to roar his way to the WBC Silver bridgerweight crown.
