Women in Motorsport Uganda (WIMU) Welfare Association has ushered in a new era of leadership following the election of former Bukedde sports reporter Ben Joan Nakintu as president, succeeding Evelyn Kobusingye, who opted not to seek a second term in office.

Nakintu was elected during the association's elective general assembly held on Monday at Vigor Sports Bar and Lounge in Kanyanya, Kampala, bringing an end to Kobusingye's first term, which began in October 2024.

Kobusingye's decision to step aside left several delegates disappointed, with some appealing to her to reconsider and serve another term. However, the outgoing president remained firm in her decision, maintaining that her commitment had always been to serve for only one term.

The transition followed an announcement by the WIMU electoral committee three weeks earlier, declaring vacancies for various executive positions and inviting interested members to participate in the electoral process.

"I was open to all my delegates when I was campaigning in the last elections that I requested only one term. My primary target was to streamline those things that were not going right, restore unity and bring reconciliation among women in motorsport, and I thank God now they have a foundation to lay bricks on for a strong building for the sport," Kobusingye said.

She expressed satisfaction with the progress made during her tenure, noting that the association now has a foundation upon which future leaders can build a stronger and more united organisation.

Newly elected Nakintu urged delegates to embrace the leadership transition and channel their energy towards strengthening the association rather than dwelling on the outgoing president's departure.

"I have come to fix what has been pending. I know WIMU is undergoing a number of challenges, but let us accept change as a fact of life," Nakintu said.

Nakintu's election marks a new chapter for WIMU as the association seeks to consolidate its gains, address existing challenges and strengthen the participation and unity of women in motorsport.
