Ugandan rally driver Edward Kirumira is determined to bounce back from a disappointing outing at the UMC Fort Portal Tourism City Rally, the fifth round of the National Rally Championship (NRC).
A Did Not Finish (DNF) result, caused by an electrical malfunction in his Toyota Corolla FX, dealt a significant blow to his championship hopes.
Despite the setback, Kirumira, navigated by seasoned co-driver Monica Birwinyo, is focused on regaining momentum at the upcoming Central Motor Club (CMC) Rajiv Ruparelia Memorial Rally.
The two-day event, set for Friday and Saturday, will traverse the scenic landscapes of Gulu district, serving as both a competitive spectacle and a heartfelt tribute to the late rally champion Rajiv Ruparelia.
Kirumira’s crew had a strong start to the season, entering the Fort Portal rally in third place with 60.5 points. However, their title ambitions were derailed by the untimely technical failure.
“We’ve done a complete overhaul of the car, fitted new parts, and we’re ready to go,” Kirumira said. “Our sights are firmly set on victory in Gulu, after which we’ll begin preparations for the season finale in November.”
The two-wheel drive category is currently led by Julius Mukalo with 86.5 points, followed closely by Mansoor Lubega on 85.5. Amir Kavuma holds third place with 65.5 points, while Kirumira and Ibrahim Lubega Pasuwa trail in fourth and fifth with 60.5 and 52.5 points, respectively.
The rally also serves as a tribute to Rajiv Ruparelia, a celebrated Ugandan rally driver and entrepreneur who tragically passed away in May. His legacy continues to inspire the motorsport community, and the event is expected to be a thrilling contest as drivers push their limits across Gulu’s challenging terrain.
