Kampala Hockey Club forward Lucky Akello believes her side was able to beat table leaders Gazelles due to the good form they currently enjoy.

Kampala Hockey Club Swan’s 5-0 thrashing of Weatherhead Gazelles in the National Hockey League points to the fact that the side is getting closer to its mission of winning this season’s league title.

Swans forward Akello scored a hattrick, which came after a 12th-minute goal from Sanne Swinkels and a fourth-quarter goal from Franziska Messenbrink in the 58th minute of the game at Lugogo Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

“Our opponent was not weak, we only maximized our chances by converting goal-scoring opportunities and deprived them of the opportunity to score,” noted Akello during an interview with Vision Sports.

The Swan’s win over Gazelles propelled them to second place on the league table with eight points, while Gazelles, although thrashed, still maintained their top spot at the summit with 10 points.

Nevertheless, much as they won the game, they squandered obvious goal-scoring chances courtesy of Sandra Namusoke, which would have cost them a lot if the game did not end in their favour.

Gazelles also posed no threat to the Swans and equally put to waste many goal-scoring opportunities; their midfield was easily penetrated by the swan’s ferocious attacking force.

Gazelles’ midfielder Jamilah Makubuya had the worst of her hockey days since she was on various occasions lost the ball to opponents and this exposed the defense who could prevent a few goals from entering the back of the net.

Gazelles coach Topher Kyamanywa commended his side for putting up a good fight even when they played very physical opponents in the Swans.

“My side is slowly improving, and I applaud them for the good show put up today, this is our second season, but being on top of the league while playing physical opponents like swans is a milestone we have achieved,” Kyamanywa stated.

In the men’s side, it was a goal galore after the Rockets hockey club thrashed   Kampala Hockey Club Originals 14-0, while Stallions beat the Thunders 7-1, and Wananchi showed how absolute they are by dismantling Badgers hockey club 7-0.

Weather head hockey club tops the men’s league with 15 points, and Wananchi SC comes in second with the same points but a three-goal deficit, and Kampala Hockey Club Stallions come in third with 12 points out of five games.
