Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi has broken the world 1000m record (2:11.83) at the Meeting International d’Athlétisme Herculis EBS in Monaco.

Incredibly, this was on his debut in the event on Friday.

The Olympic and world 800m champion shaved 0.13 off the world record of 2:11.96 set by his compatriot Noah Ngeny in Rieti in 1999.

That means the previous record had stood intact for 27 years.

As is tradition, Wanyonyi's new world record is subject to the usual ratification procedure.

In the race, he followed the pacemakers as the first pacemaker reached 400m on world record pace in 50.95 as planned.

The second pacemaker hit 800m in 1:45.11, before the Kenyan debutant took over and raced towards the finish line, with 2022 world 1500m champion Jake Wightman hot on his heels.

Wanyonyi crossed the finish line in 2:11.83 while Wightman followed him in 2:12.77 to move to fifth on the world all-time list.

World and Olympic medallist Djamel Sedjati was third in 2:13.94 as the top six all finished under 2:15.
