KCCA and Prisons Netball Clubs made a strong start to the East Africa Club Netball Championships, which kicked off on Monday evening at the New Amaani Stadium in Zanzibar.
KCCA was the first Ugandan team in action, registering a commanding 65–25 win over JKU.
“The start wasn’t bad, but we didn’t play the way we wanted. We made a lot of errors and should have scored more goals,” said KCCA head coach Fred Mugerwa.
Despite the win, Mugerwa emphasized the need to raise their performance levels, especially since they are grouped with powerhouse NIC, who also won their opening match against Tanzanian side Zimamoto.
“We’re not only focused on NIC; we are looking at all teams. Where possible, we want to win with big margins—and we believe we can beat NIC too,” Mugerwa added.
Meanwhile, Prisons Netball Club kicked off their campaign with a solid 55–39 victory over Jeshi Stars.
“Jeshi was a good team. Being the home side, they had strong support. But our young players combined well with the experienced ones to secure the win. Jeshi gave us a tough time until we made some key substitutions,” said head coach Kato, who was making his debut as head coach at a regional tournament.
Despite challenges, Kato's side showed resilience and composure under pressure.
Looking ahead, NIC will face another Tanzanian team, Uhamiaji, while Prisons take on Magereza and KCCA will battle Zimamoto.
