The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has issued a strong call for discipline among players, officials, and fans to ensure a successful and peaceful 2025 Masaza Cup Football Tournament.

While addressing the media on Wednesday at Bulange, Mengo during the official launch of this year’s edition, urged all stakeholders to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and unity.

“To the organisers and match officials, be as transparent as possible, let football win. We want honesty in the organisation and officiation of these games. When there is transparency, we avoid the ugly scenes of violence. Lastly, to the players, club officials, and fans, you must exhibit high levels of discipline,” said Mayiga.

Mayiga also expressed concern over persistent issues of misconduct and superstition in past editions of the tournament, including accusations of witchcraft and violent fan behavior, which he condemned as unprofessional and backward.

“I do not want to hear stories of witchcraft; I have heard funny stories of legs or heads of chickens placed on the pitch to favour one side against the other. These things are not true. Victory comes through proper preparation, not superstition. Stop these barbaric behaviors,” he emphasised.

Masaza Cup organising committee chairperson Sulaiman Ssejjengo applauded the cooperation from the team managers and assured the public of a well-organised and transparent tournament.

“We are fully prepared to organise a successful tournament. We do not know who will win, but we are confident that the best-prepared team will emerge champion,” said Ssejjengo.

Daniel Kayongo from Plascon, one of the tournament’s main sponsors, expressed satisfaction with their ongoing partnership with Buganda Kingdom and pledged continued support.

“For three consecutive years, we have proudly sponsored this prestigious competition. We remain committed to nurturing young athletes and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Buganda,” said Kayongo.

The 2025 Masaza Cup kicks off on Saturday with defending champions Buddu hosting Gomba at Kitovu Sports Arena in Masaka City. In this year's tournament, there are  18 teams which are divided into three groups: Bulange, Masengere, and Muganzirwa, each comprising six teams.
