Buweekula crowned Masaza Cup champions as Kabaka graces Nakivubo finale

The Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium was swept into a wave of jubilation as the Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, made a surprise appearance at the 2025 Masaza Cup final on Saturday.

His arrival at 2:30 p.m. sent ripples of excitement through the packed venue, with fans visibly elated by the unexpected honour.

The Kabaka was warmly received by key dignitaries, including the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, and Sports Minister Robert Sserwanga.

His Majesty’s gracious walk around the stadium, marked by warm waves to his subjects, added a regal touch to the day’s festivities.

On the pitch, Buweekula FC made history by clinching their first-ever Masaza Cup title with a 1–0 victory over Ssingo FC. The decisive goal came in the 16th minute from Alex Taremwa, sealing a hard-fought win and sparking celebrations among Buweekula supporters.

In the third-place playoff, Kyaggwe FC edged Bugerere FC 1–0, courtesy of a goal from team captain Julius Kato. The team received sh7 million in prize money for their efforts.

Despite missing out on the championship, Kato spoke with humility and determination.

“I’m profoundly disappointed that we didn’t emerge victorious, but I commend my teammates for their unwavering teamwork throughout the season. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but we’re already looking forward to next season, ready to regroup and come back stronger.”

Kato’s reflections were especially poignant, as Kyaggwe had also narrowly missed out on the title in the previous season’s final against Buddu, where Micheal Waraga scored the lone goal in a 1–0 win. His words echoed a spirit of resilience and camaraderie that continues to define the Masaza Cup.
