Kampala University founding vice chancellor Prof. Badru Kateregga has challenged his institution's football team to make the ongoing Pepsi University Football League season a memorable one by reclaiming the title they last won in 2016.

Kateregga made the rallying call as Kampala University opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against the University of Kisubi (UNIK) in an entertaining season opener played at Buziga Islamic Secondary School, the venue for Kampala University's home matches this season.

Having gone a decade without lifting the coveted trophy, Kateregga believes the time has come for the university to end its long wait for another league triumph.

"It has been a long time since Kampala University last won the trophy. Kindly, let this be our season. Players and the technical team, please do the needful," Kateregga urged.

The hosts, however, had to settle for a point after being forced to come from behind against a determined UNIK side.

UNIK took the lead in the 32nd minute through Joel Bakitwale, who put the visitors ahead and gave them a deserved advantage going into the break.

Kampala University responded almost immediately after the restart, with Rayan Ssekitoleko finding the equaliser just two minutes into the second half to restore parity.

The result represented a significant step forward for UNIK, who are yet to register a victory in the competition since making their debut in 2020.

Their improved performance comes under the new coaching partnership of Allan Katwe and Noah Ssebwato, who assumed responsibility for the team this year following the departure of former coach Jessy Lukoki.

Ssebwato attributed the team's renewed competitiveness to improved institutional support, particularly the introduction of bursaries for student-athletes.

He commended UNIK management for recognising the importance of investing in players who can balance their academic responsibilities with competitive football.

"We appreciate the management of UNIK. The team previously did not have bursaries, but this time the institution has introduced them. We have also looked for students who can pursue their studies while playing football," Ssebwato said.
