Karamoja Games seek sh70m support for August edition

The chairperson of the Karamoja Games, Jimmy Achuda, has called upon the government, the National Council of Sports, NGOs, and well-wishers to come on board and support the fourth edition of the Karamoja Games, scheduled to run from August 27 to 30, 2026, at Abim SS in Abim District.

Achuda, while speaking to Vision Sports on Tuesday, said the local organizing committee is in the final stages of preparation for the games, but it is surrounded by financial hiccups that are hindering the preparations.

According to Achuda, the organizing committee currently needs shs 70 million to facilitate the officiation of the event, transportation of athletes, feeding, medical care, awards, and the purchase of water during the championship.

He said that during the previous championships, a variety of companies came on board to give material support such as balls, trophies, and medals for football, netball, volleyball, woodball, and athletics.

The annual event, hosted in a rotational manner, is aimed at unifying communities and identifying talent in the sports disciplines of football, netball, athletics, volleyball, and woodball.

The three-day event brings together athletes across the nine districts of the Karamoja sub-region, including Moroto, Kotido, Abim, Kaabong, Karenga, Napak, Amudat, Nabilatuk, and Nakapiripirit, with the main objective of unity and talent search in the region.

The first edition was held in Moroto in 2018, the second edition in Kotido in 2019, and the third edition was held in Nakapiripirit in 2022.

Moroto District are the defending champions of the games held in 2022 at Nakapiripirit Primary School playgrounds, having won trophies in netball and football.

In the same championship, Kotido District's athletics team won the athletics trophy with 29 points, ahead of Moroto in second position with 26 points, while Amudat was third with 22 points.
