Kampala University crowned Rwanda Genocide Netball champions

Kampala University (KU)Netball Club announced its arrival on the regional stage in style after winning the Rwanda Genocide Netball Tournament on debut, defeating all their opponents in Kigali to lift the prestigious trophy.

The annual tournament, held in remembrance of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi, took place from June 20-21 in Kigali and attracted clubs from Rwanda. KU emerged unbeaten, overcoming two Rwandan netball clubs to secure the title.

The team was welcomed back to Kampala University’s main campus in Ggaba, where players and officials presented the trophy to the university’s proprietor, Al Hajji Prof Badru Kateregga.

While receiving the trophy, Kateregga commended the team for flying the university’s flag high and pledged continued investment in sports, which he described as one of the institution’s strongest brands.

He, however, reminded the players that academic excellence should remain their top priority despite their sporting success.

“Everything has an end, and so does sport. What will save you after your sporting journey is the career you pursue. Therefore, I encourage you to take your education seriously because it is the only thing that will secure your future,” Kateregga said.

The victory has also opened doors for greater regional collaboration. Kampala University Chief Executive Officer Muhammed  Faquih Kateregga revealed that the institution is in advanced discussions to establish a partnership with Rwanda Netball aimed at developing the sport.

“Following our performance in Kigali, we were approached about the possibility of partnering with Rwanda Netball and helping develop their technical skills. They have good players, but they lack skills . We are drafting the necessary documents and hope to begin the partnership at the right time,” he said.

Head coach Jessie Asiimwe attributed the triumph to teamwork, discipline and determination displayed by the players throughout the competition.

“I want to thank my team for putting up a great performance. Their commitment and teamwork made the difference. I also want to assure our administrators that we shall continue working hard and winning trophies,” Asiimwe said.

He added that the team’s focus has now shifted to the forthcoming East Africa University Games, where they hope to build on their success in Kigali and further establish Kampala University as a regional netball powerhouse.
