Kalangala returns to National Primary Ball Games after seven-year absence

After a seven-year absence, Kalangala District has returned to the national primary ball games, making its comeback at this year's competition in Mubende with a U12 netball team.

The district last participated in the national primary ball games in 2019. This year, Kalangala has fielded only one team, but the young players have already made a strong statement, winning all five of their matches in Group C to qualify for the round of 16.

The impressive start has renewed hopes that sports can once again become a major part of life in the island district.

Kalangala District Sports Officer Paul Mutunzi said the team's performance has motivated him to work harder to develop sports across the district.

"I am so excited with our district's performance and being able to be part of this year's nationals. When I go back to Kalangala, I will make sure that every school has the right coaches. Give us four years and Kalangala will be a threat to everyone," Mutunzi said.

Mutunzi, who has been in the district for only two months, however, says geographical challenges remain a major obstacle to developing sports.

Kalangala has 23 government schools, with 14 located on different islands, making supervision, movement of coaches, and transportation difficult.

"I have been in Kalangala for two months. If we are helped with means of transport like speed boats, I will be able to promote sports in various schools," he said.

For the Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA) Chairperson for Kalangala District, Naduuto Innocent Maria, Kalangala's return is about more than just competition. She believes participation has had a positive impact on both the young athletes and the officials accompanying them.

"We are on a mission to take the trophy to Kalangala. We want to show the nation that we still exist despite having spent seven years without being part of the games," Naduuto said.

Team coach Lawrence Sseruwo believes the players can go all the way but says more work is needed to sharpen their skills and build their confidence.

Team captain Christine Nakale applauded Kalangala's district leaders for making it possible for the team to travel to Mubende and compete at the national level. Nakale promised to lead her teammates with determination as they chase the trophy.
