SC Villa came from a goal down to beat Maroons 2-1 at Wankulukuku Stadium on Thursday in the opening game of the second round of the Uganda Premier League.
Fred Amaku had given the Maroons a first half lead before Patrick Jonah Kakande scored a brace for SC Villa in the second half.
Kakande revealed that the victory was a huge statement as they reduced the point gap between them and the table leaders.
"It was a sweet win since we managed to go ahead of Maroons. We came into the game with a lot of character and we wanted to win. Even with a goal down, we had hope that we would bounce back," noted Kakande.
The victory saw Villa move to fourth with 29 points, while Maroons FC dropped to fifth with 28 points. BUL are top with 33 points.
SC Villa will travel to Masindi to face Kitara in their next game and Kakande is hoping they can beat the newbies.
"We know it's not easy but we are going to fight hard to see that we get results. We know Kitara is a good team but we shall give it our best," he added.
On Villa's title ambitions, Kakande feels they can achieve that. The league will resume on Friday as table leaders BUL host KCCA at MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo. KCCA lost 1-0 to the Jinja-based side.
At Kakyeka Stadium, Mbarara City will battle Express, while URA will be away from Gaddafi.
