Kaberamaido district has selected a team of 26 athletes to represent it in the 2026 Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA) kids and special needs athletic championship.

The district, which has seven sub-counties and two town councils, used a zonal system to pick the team.

Moses Egabu, Chairperson of UPSSA Kaberamaido branch, said the district will field 12 athletes in the Under-12 category and another 12 in the Under-14 category. He added that this year, two athletes with special needs will also compete at the national level.

Egabu criticized some schools that did not take part in this year’s athletics, saying they were denying learners their right to participate in sports.

Several young athletes showcased their talents and earned slots to represent the district. Meanwhile, schools have been warned against age cheating, which often affects performance at nationals since such athletes are routinely screened out.

During the selection event held at Kaberamaido Primary School, the best performers won gifts such as basins and books as a way of motivation.

With the national primary athletics championship scheduled to begin on May 2, 2026, in Tororo, the District LC5 Chairperson, Victor Rex Ekesu, emphasized the need for proper training.

“We do not just need to go to Tororo to participate; we should go and compete with the rest of the athletes,” Ekesu said. He assured that the district would remain supportive of sports.

The acting District Education Officer, Pius Ebinu, encouraged parents to continue supporting their children with talent in sports.

“Do not underrate sports. It is something that can help one earn a living. Support your children who are talented in sports,” Ebinu said.

Ebinu also warned schools that did not take part in this year’s sports activities that they would be handled as required.
