As the race for qualification to the national stage of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) competitions intensifies, the USSSA Teso Zone championships have kicked off in Ngora District.
The championships are being hosted by Ngora Parents School and Ngora Girls School. Participating teams began arriving in the early hours of Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the co-hosting schools.
The tournament, which runs from April 1 to April 4, 2026, has attracted a total of 88 schools, including 42 boys’ teams and 46 girls’ sides, all battling to qualify for the national level.
Players are expected to showcase their talents in a variety of sports disciplines, including football, basketball, hockey, rugby 15s, tennis, table tennis, badminton, U16 volleyball, U16 handball, and U16 basketball 3x3 for both boys and girls. Girls will also compete in U16 netball.
Ngora Parents School was granted the rights to host the USSSA championships after fulfilling all necessary requirements.
John Robert Osuu, Chairperson of the USSSA Teso Zone, said the championships, hosted at Ngora Parents School, have also seen players accommodated at Ngora School for the Deaf, BKC, Compassion Ngora, and Ngora Boys to handle the large number of athletes expected.
“We are glad to say that this year’s zonal competition has started well with a surprising number of attendees. As organizers, we expect maximum discipline from the players, officials, and the surrounding community,” Osuu said.
Amus College School, the defending champions, will be the team every school is eager to beat. They dominated the zonal championship in the 2025 campaign hosted at Bishop Maraka College in Kumi District. Amus College clinched both the boys’ and girls’ titles—edging Bukedea Comprehensive School–South 5–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in the boys’ final, before thrashing Olila High School 5–0 in the girls’ decider.
Peter Okwi, USSSA Secretary General for Teso Zone, said the tournament has brought together top schools from across the region, including Amuria S.S., Wera Seed, Bukedea S.S., Otuboi Comprehensive, Kaberamaido S.S., Ngora High School, Soroti Secondary School, and Teso College-Aloet, among others.
