The Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA) national ball games have been expanded by three new disciplines, with judo, woodball, and kho kho making their maiden appearances at the championship.

UPSSA President William Bwambale says the expansion is aimed at enabling learners in schools to gain greater involvement in sports and to help Uganda's primary schools section prepare for the increasingly expanding FEASSSA games.

"The association's major target is to bring all learners into the sporting world. Since talents vary, we opted to see to it that other sporting disciplines are incorporated into the existing ones," Bwambale added.

According to the president, for the first appearance at the national level, the association has recorded 25 teams showcasing talent in kho kho, 30 in woodball, while judo remained as a demonstration sport.

Judo president George William Ssekiwangu believes the sport will grow widely in Ugandan schools since it requires minimal equipment and is therefore affordable for everyone.

The games entered their fourth day of competition in the host city of Mubende, with athletes in action.

"I would like to thank the Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association for the opportunity granted to the Federation of Judo in Uganda for giving us a chance to expand the sport to primary schools in the country. This can help in identifying talent," said Ssekiwangu.

The 2026 National Primary Schools Games, hosted at Mubende Army SS in Mubende Municipality, have brought together 156 local governments competing in netball, volleyball, handball, and football across the age categories of U12 and U14.
