Excitement is building at Jubilee 2000 Secondary School in Karenga District after the school embarked on the construction of three football pitches as it anticipates hosting the 2027 Karamoja Zonal Games.
Paul Oboi, the headteacher, told Vision Sport that the new pitches, costing Shs100m, will serve as vibrant hubs of sporting activity, providing students with a dedicated space to hone their skills, compete at the highest level, and forge lifelong friendships through sportsmanship and camaraderie.
"Through strategic investments in sports facilities, the school seeks to empower students to unlock their full potential and pursue excellence in all aspects of their academic and extracurricular pursuits," Oboi said.
According to Oboi, the investment underscores the school's proactive approach to enhancing the overall student experience and creating opportunities for personal growth and achievement.
The construction, being undertaken on the school's 30-hectare land, is supervised by Charles Nassur, the Karenga District Engineer. The project is expected to run until early January 2027.
The development has sparked excitement among students, staff, and the wider community, heralding a new era of sporting excellence at the Karamoja zone-based school.
Martine Erongot, the games teacher, said the initiative was partly inspired by the remarkable achievement of the school's girls' football team, which won the 2026 Karamoja Regional Football Tournament before competing at the zonal and national competitions in Kampala.
"The achievement demonstrated the enormous sporting potential within the school and inspired management to invest in better facilities to nurture more talent," Erongot said.
He added that the three fields will ease congestion, allow different teams to train simultaneously, and increase participation in football among both boys and girls as the school prepares to host the zonal games.
The school commended Moses Agum, the Chief Administrative Officer, for facilitating the provision of a district grader, which undertook the major ground preparation works.
"We thank the office of the CAO, Karenga District Local Government, for supporting us with the grading machine for clearing the fields," said Oboi.
He also applauded the Board of Governors, led by Patrick Mulumba, for providing funds to meet fuel costs and drivers' allowances, thereby facilitating the effective operation of the machinery.
This collaboration demonstrates the importance of partnerships between school leadership and local government in advancing education and community development.
Beyond hosting the 2027 competition, Jubilee 2000 SS intends to establish a sustainable sports development programme that will nurture talent, strengthen girls' participation in sports, and give more young people from Karamoja an opportunity to compete at regional and national levels.
