After a months-long hiatus following a life-threatening accident in Seeta, Ugandan rally driver Joshua Muwanguzi is set to reignite his motorsport career at the upcoming Pearl of Africa Rally.

The soft-spoken N12 Subaru driver, known for his tenacity, has overcome adversity and is eager to prove his mettle on the rugged terrains of Mbarara, where the iconic event will debut from May 9th to 12th.

Muwanguzi’s last appearance was at the Fort Portal Rally earlier this year, where he delivered a stellar performance on Day 1 before tragedy struck.

The accident, which he describes as a “moment that nearly cloned my life,” forced him into recovery and reflection. Now, with renewed vigor, he returns to the driver’s seat alongside navigator Robert Katabalwa, marking the duo’s first official partnership. Their chemistry and strategy will be pivotal as they tackle the challenging Mbarara routes.

A devoted father to Abigail and Alba, Muwanguzi credits his children as his driving force.

“They inspire me to push harder,” he shared, reflecting on his recent success at the 3rd round of the MX Championship in Mityana, where he clinched a podium finish. That performance has bolstered his confidence ahead of the Pearl of Africa Rally, though he anticipates fierce competition.

Leading the charge against him is Subaru rival Ponsiano Lwakataka, the current championship leader after dominating the past two events with maximum points. Lwakataka’s relentless pace sets a high bar, but Muwanguzi remains undaunted, vowing to leverage his experience and grit to challenge for victory.

This year’s Pearl of Africa Rally promises added excitement as Mbarara hosts the event for the first time, drawing six international crews from Kenya and Rwanda. The foreign entrants will spice up the competition, testing the skills of local drivers on unfamiliar terrain.

Fans eagerly await Muwanguzi’s comeback story a blend of resilience, family motivation, and raw speed. As engines roar to life in Mbarara, all eyes will be on the N12 Subaru and its determined pilot, ready to turn adversity into triumph.
