In a stunning upset, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) knocked out two-time champions Kampala University (KU) with a 2-1 aggregate victory, securing their maiden semifinal appearance in the Pepsi University tournament after seven years of participation.

The decisive moment came yesterday at IUIU's Mbale campus, where Ismail Tambula's 14th-minute strike sealed a 1-0 second-leg win. This followed last week's tense 1-1 first-leg draw in Nsambya, setting up a dramatic showdown for the quarterfinal tie.

KU fought desperately to overturn the deficit, but IUIU's defensive trio of Emanuel Shikanga, Calvin Otim, and Sudaisi Masogoi stood firm against KU's attacking duo Gilbert Wanume and Joseph Kimera. Reserve goalkeeper Isaac Mwandha, replacing the suspended Shadat Musasizi, delivered several key saves to preserve the historic clean sheet.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among IUIU players and supporters. Head coach Haruna Keba, who has guided the team since their tournament debut, credited the achievement to meticulous preparation and divine favor.

"This milestone reflects our hard work and Allah's grace," an emotional Keba remarked. "My players have made history, and we're determined to go all the way to the finals."

The victory extends IUIU's unbeaten run to eight matches, including their Group A triumph over defending champions Nkumba University, who were surprisingly eliminated earlier.

With three semifinalists confirmed—IUIU, Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), and St. Lawrence University (SLAU)—attention now turns to today's disciplinary hearing at Kati Kati restaurant in Lugogo. The committee will rule on the abandoned quarterfinal between Muteesa I Royal University and Bugema University, which was halted in the 78th minute due to fan violence. The verdict will complete the semifinal lineup ahead of the tournament draw.
